How a auto-lock bottom is built

A tuck-top carton with a crash-lock (auto) bottom. The four bottom flaps are partly glued during manufacture so that when the flat carton is squared, the bottom springs into place and locks. It ships flat and sets up in one motion.

Putting it together

  1. 1Take the flat carton and push the two folded edges towards each other.
  2. 2The bottom drops and locks automatically.
  3. 3Load the product and close the top tuck.

Measuring for this style

Length (L)
The inside width of the front panel, left to right.
Width (W)
The inside depth from front to back: the width of a side panel.
Height (H)
The inside height from the base to the top opening.

All sizes are inside dimensions. Add 1 to 2 mm of clearance around the product. How to measure

When to choose it

Pick it for heavier retail products and fast packing lines, such as bottles, jars and electronics. For light products a reverse tuck end is cheaper.

Before you print

  • The bottom gussets are glued at the converter; the dieline needs glue areas marked.
  • Very tall, narrow cartons may need a deeper bottom flap to lock firmly.
  • Keep text and logos 3 mm inside every crease so folding does not crack the print.
