Questions people ask
What is a dieline, and is the tool free?
A dieline is the flat, unfolded outline of a box: solid lines are cut, dashed lines are folded. Printers and cutting tables use it to make your packaging. The PW Studio is free to use. You can design, preview and download files without paying or signing up.
Can I open the files in Canva or Adobe Illustrator?
Yes. The SVG and PDF exports open in Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer and Inkscape with cut, crease and bleed lines on separate named layers. Canva can import the PDF or SVG as an image to design over. We do not produce native .ai files; the PDF is the Illustrator-ready option.
What is material creep or creep allowance?
Board has thickness, so panels that fold around other panels need a little extra length. That extra is the creep allowance. PW Studio adds it from the board caliper you choose, for example 0.457 mm for 18 pt SBS. Your manufacturer may still adjust it for their machines.
What is the minimum print quantity?
PW Studio is a design tool, so it has no minimum. Print minimums depend on the printer and the process: digital short runs can start in the tens, while offset litho usually starts in the hundreds or thousands. Send us your quantity through the quote form and we will tell you what is practical.
Are sample kits available in the UK and USA?
We are preparing material sample kits for the UK and the USA. Register your interest on the Sample Kits page and we will contact you when kits are ready to send, with contents and price.
How should I measure my product?
Measure the widest points of the product, including caps, pumps or handles. Length is the front panel width, width is the side panel depth, and height is from the base to the top. Add 1 to 3 mm of clearance on each side for a snug fit, more if you add an insert.
Which file should I choose?
Choose PDF to send to a printer or manufacturer: it keeps the true size. Choose SVG to design in a vector app. Choose DXF for CAD software and digital cutting tables. PNG and JPG are picture proofs for email and presentations, not files to cut from.
Do I need an account?
No. You can design as a guest and your current box is kept in this browser. Create a free account when you want to save projects permanently and open them on another device.
Is my artwork uploaded anywhere?
No. Artwork you place in the studio stays in your browser. It is not sent to our servers.
Are the dielines ready for production?
Studio-ready styles come from a parametric engine that applies board thickness, glue tab and tuck rules, and the files are true to size. Every die is still checked by the manufacturer before cutting, because machines, board grain and glue vary. Styles marked Preview show the structure only and are not cutting files yet.
Using the studio
Small things that save time
Two speeds of arrows
Inner arrows beside each size change whole units (30 → 31). The outer column changes tenths (30.0 → 30.1). With the keyboard, use ↑ and ↓, and Shift for tenths.
Lock ratio
Turn on Lock ratio to scale all three sides together when one changes.
Presets
Pick a preset starting size for common products, or save your own sizes to reuse.
Units
Switch between mm, cm and inches at any time. Sizes are stored in millimetres, so nothing is lost.
Auto-save and accounts
Boxes save in your browser automatically. Sign in to keep them in your account and open them on any device.
Share
Share a link that opens the same box and size, or send it by WhatsApp, email and social apps.
Dark mode
Use the moon button in the studio header to switch between light and dark.
